Army Arrests Sheikh Zakzaky In Zaria


The leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has been arrested by soldiers after long hours’ siege on his residence in Zaria.

One of his followers confirmed his arrest to Channels Television.


“I saw armoured tanks demolishing the Hussainiyya shrine and the residence of Sheikh El-Zakzaky,” he said.

Sheik Muhammad Turi, the second in command to Sheik Ibrahim Zakzaky and the group’s spokesman, Ibrahim Usman have been killed by soldiers.

Sheik Turi and Usman were said to have been shot by soldiers in front of Zakzaky’s residence in Gyellesu area, in Zaria on Sunday morning.

A senior member of the Shiite Sect confirmed the killing of the two senior members of the movement to Channels Television’s correspondent.


He said that both Sheik Turi and Usman were shot by soldiers when they stormed Zakzaky’s house to arrest him.

The Nigerian Army and members of the sect have accused each other of instigating attacks that led to the death of members of the movement on Saturday and Sunday morning.


Heavy fighting broke out late Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday, between men of the Nigerian army and members of the Islamic movement of Nigeria also known as Shiite, following the surrounding of the house of leader of the movement, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, by troops.

Following an alleged assassination attempt on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Burutai at about noon on Saturday, when his convoy was attacked by the Shiite members, the troops returned to El-Zakzaky’s residence in Gyallesu area of Zaria, at about 11pm.
